A 500lb unexploded WW2 bomb found on the new Beal Homes housing development in Goole has been safely detonated by the Armed Forces’ Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team. The live device, which was found by construction workers on the site off Rawcliffe Road on Thursday, July 22, was detonated during a controlled explosion at 4.22pm on Saturday, July 24.
Residents within the immediate area surrounding the bomb were evacuated from their properties and businesses in the area were asked to close until the bomb was detonated. Surrounding roads including the M62 motorway were also closed from Friday evening and a 1,600m vertical no-fly zone was enforced. A statement issued on behalf of all Humberside Emergency Services, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Highways England and Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust said: “On behalf of the Humberside Emergency Taskforce, we’d like to thank the members of the public, particularly those that had to be evacuated for safety, for staying clear of the cordon and allowing the team to bring this operation to a safe conclusion. “Humberside Police would like to take this opportunity to thank all partners involved in the incident for their swift, effective leadership, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team for their efficient, safe detonation.” Since the discovery of the bomb, rumours have been circulating in the town that the bomb came from a Lancaster bomber which shed its load before crash landing nearby, but this has not yet been confirmed by the EOD team.
