Riverside student Ryan stars on BBC show

Eagle-eyed viewers of the BBC show ‘Something Special, We’re All Friends’ might have noticed Riverside student Ryan Atkinson appearing in the first episode of the new series.

Alongside his teacher Mrs France, Ryan’s episode ‘Get Set Gardening’ featured filming days at Normanby Hall’s walled garden as well as the Pink Pig Farm in Scunthorpe. Mrs France first heard about the show when researchers from the BBC contacted the special school ahead of filming locally. She said: “They were looking for children who could either be on the main show, or children to do the signing in-between clips of the show. “Something Special has always been a firm favourite of ours due to the commitment to ensure all children are involved and also because of the inclusive use of Makaton sign language. “We were so excited at the prospect of being on this show, how could we possibly say 'no’?!” The BBC researchers then came to the school to carry out screen tests with children who were happy to appear. Mrs France continued: “Ryan has been in my class for over four years now so I think our relationship came across effectively on the screen test.”

The filming took place over two days in June last year, Mr France added: “It was incredibly exciting and also extremely hot! “Parasols, hand held fans and ice-creams we're all used to help keep Ryan cool. “It was on the second day that we met with Mr Tumble, which was very exciting! “The team involved were all exceptionally kind and patient. “Justin Fletcher and George Webster were wonderful to work alongside.” The series officially aired on Monday, January 13 but you can catch it on BBC Iplayer at www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0026zm9 The whole school helped to celebrate Ryan’s TV appearance, with a red carpet and a throne, made by Mrs France, for Ryan to sit on. Mrs France concluded: “The excitement was palpable! “Ryan's Mum, step-Dad and brother also came to the premiere! “Following the showing we did a Q and A session and then Ryan signed photographs for pupils and staff!”
