A former Snaith woman has been crowned as the winner of a national pageant competition.

The Axholme Academy was deemed a “good” school in a recent inspection by education watchdog, Ofsted.
The school, situated in Crowle, received a “good” rating in each of the assessed criteria in inspections which took place on Wednesday and Thursday, March 8 and 9. The report said: “Leaders have high expectations of pupils’ conduct. Recent changes to the behaviour policy have supported a more focused atmosphere for learning. “Most, but not all, parents and carers feel that their concerns are listened to well.” The inspector praised pupils at the school, describing them as “polite and respectful”. The report detailed that disruption in lessons is rare, with bullying infrequent and education emphasised by leaders at the school. Indeed, the assessment highlighted the school’s updated curriculum, which focuses reading.
The report explained that the curriculum was becoming more embedded, which was having a positive impact on the the pupils’ learning. The inspector did, however, note that the school’s examination results were not currently satisfactory for school leaders and that staff members actions, which were in the best interest of the pupils, did adversely affect the published data. Teachers at the school were praised for the support they granted to children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). The report said: “Pupils receive additional support, with reading for example, to enable them to access the wider curriculum. “Teachers understand the needs of these pupils well and leaders are rightly revising this curriculum in order for SEND pupils to catch up with their peers more rapidly.” The inspector noted that too many pupils were persistently absent from school, causing gaps to arise in some students’ knowledge. To combat this issue, the report said that leaders at the school had added additional staff to work on the matter. The report suggested that, to further the develop students’ PSHE learning, teachers should revisit concepts, particular those surrounding other faiths, beliefs and British values.
In a statement released on its website, Principal of The Axholme Academy, Damien Keogh, said: These findings are no surprise to us and agree with our own Academy self-evaluations. We never ‘do things just for Ofsted’; we do things because they fit with our values and vision to go ‘beyond expectations’ and we believe they are right for our community, to help our students thrive academically, socially and emotionally. “Nevertheless, it is always pleasing to have our practice and Quality of Education endorsed by external organisations. “The areas identified by the inspection team that we need to improve further were already an area of focus for the Academy and will continue to form a central part of our forward looking improvement strategies. “I must say a massive well done and thank you to our whole staff team, Governors, students and parents. It is only through our combined commitment, dedication and hard-work, each and every day to be Ready and Able to Learn so that we will be enabled to go ‘beyond expectations.”
