Staff at Sowerby Chartered Accountants, based in Goole and Beverley, have raised over £10,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support after completing an all-night, 24-mile hike across the Yorkshire Three Peaks.

The team of 13, who have been in training for months, braved all weathers in the dark to complete the mammoth challenge in just over 12 hours on Saturday, October 16. Patrick Scargill, partner at Sowerby Chartered Accountants, said: “Having lost a close family member after a ten-year battle with cancer, I have seen first-hand the amazing physical and emotional support provided by Macmillan. “When we first talked about walking the Yorkshire Three Peaks at night I expected one or two people to sign up, I was blown away by the fact that 13 people put themselves up for this gruelling challenge. “I am incredibly proud of Team Sowerby for completing the challenge and having Macmillan Cancer Support as our chosen charity was a fantastic motivation.”

The team have raised over £10,000 for the charity through their fundraiser, with all the money going towards Macmillan’s work supporting people after a diagnosis of cancer. Despite the gruelling conditions of the challenge, the team say they enjoyed it so much they are already planning their next event. Billie McLouglin, business development manager at Sowerby Chartered Accountants said: “It was a big commitment with the training involved but we were all motivated to raise money for Macmillan, a cause close to our hearts. “I think we were all nervous before the walk took place, we felt a big responsibility to everyone that sponsored us, we knew we had to complete it.  “I’m so proud of the team effort, we stayed together throughout the walk, crossed the finish line together and felt ecstatic when we finished at 8am, the positivity and high morale throughout is something that will stay with me for a long time.”  Macmillan’s fundraising manager, Becci Shanks has thanked the team at Sowerby’s for their efforts. She said: “On behalf of everyone at Macmillan we can’t thank the team at Sowerby’s enough, like all charities Macmillan have seen a massive decline in donations because of the pandemic.

At a time when demand for Macmillan services continues to be high, it’s never been more important to raise vital funds so that we can deliver the services that people living with cancer so desperately need. “The team’s determination and sheer grit to complete the all-night challenge is truly humbling and it’s no exaggeration to say Macmillan and people with cancer have never needed their help more than they do right now.” There is still opportunity to support Team Sowerby’s fundraising for Macmillan by visiting their Just Giving Page at: https://www.justgiving.com/team/Sowerby3Peaks Anyone diagnosed with cancer can contact the Macmillan Support Line seven days a week on 0808 808 00 00 or visit the Macmillan website (www.macmillan.org.uk)
