A family from Howden have completed a gruelling three-day hiking challenge to raise money to install a water pump in a village in Uganda.
Craig Thackray-Brook and his sons, Kyle, 20 and Lewis 17, climbed the three UK peaks in just three days, as well as driving a whopping 1,100 miles inbetween to raise money for Christ’s Grace Ministries, a small organisation supporting villagers in Uganda. The trio climbed Mount Snowden, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis on June 19-21, in a bid to raise cash for the project.
Craig explained how the fundraiser came about: “My family support an organisation called Christ’s Grace Ministries and we are sponsoring a child called Rachel through the organisation and have committed to funding her education throughout her life. “When we heard about the project to raise funds to install a water pump in one of the villages that Christ’s Grace Ministries works in, we decide to try and raise some funds to help.” The family have managed to raise an impressive £1,330 and charity Wood U Waste, have funded an additional £1,000 towards the project. Family friend, Gill Dixon has also raised an additional £400 towards the project by delivering talks and presentations, taking the total raised to over £2,750.
Craig is hoping to raise a further £250 to cover the remainder of the cost and his JustGiving page will remain open for donations. The dedicated fundraiser explained the impact this water pump could have for people living in the village. He said: “Many children like Rachel who we are sponsoring don’t even make it to school age to access their education due to not having access to clean drinking water.
