Two kind-hearted Year 9 students from Read School in Drax, have rallied friends and local businesses alike to raise much needed funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Annabelle Fox, 13 and Emma Maden, 14, have launched a new snack bar selling crisps, chocolate, and sweet treats to fellow pupils during their breaks at school to raise money for the vital cause. After hosting two sales before the Easter break, their fundraising total has already reached £227, but with the pair planning to continue their sales throughout the Summer Term, that total is set to increase even further.
Speaking about why the girls decided to raise money for Macmillan, Emma’s Dad Keith said: “Both the girls have had grandparents who have been supported by Macmillan so it is a cause that is close to both their hearts. “As a family we have done various fundraising events over the years, and during lockdown Emma did a 400-mile cycling challenge to raise money for Cancer Research, so she is really keen to raise money to help others.” Anabelle’s Mum, Catherine added: “My Dad has currently got skin cancer and Macmillan have provided a lot of support to him. The girls were talking at school and decided they wanted to do something to raise money for charity.”
The teens have been supported by a number of local businesses who have made their fundraising possible including, Jos Richardson and Son Limited, Maden Machine Tools and C Dawsons and Sons butchers, who have all donated items to be sold on the stall. Both Catherine and Keith say they are incredibly proud of their daughters, and the whole school community has praised them for their efforts. Philappa Anderson, Head of Key Stage 3 at the school said: “Sadly, most of us and the school community have had our lives touched by cancer in some way or other, so raising funds for MacMillan seems to really hit home. “The fresh goods, so kindly donated, were very popular and who doesn't like a strawberry string for a good cause?”
A spokesperson for Read School added: "Philanthropy and a community-centric worldview has always been central to Read School's ethos, from its inception in 1667. Annabelle and Emma both show how these values continue to thrive within the school - having embarked on such a selfless venture.
