Brownies go green
The Friends of Howden Marsh Group has teamed up with Howden Brownies to plant 70 new trees in the nature reserve.

Howden Rotary Club is gearing up to take part in this year’s Maritime Group of Rotary Clubs’ Disability Games.
The games will take place on Sunday, April 23 at Hymers College, Hull, with disabled people from Howden, Goole, Selby and the surrounding areas invited to take part. Rotary Districts 1270 and now 1040 have been holding the games continuously for nearly 30 years, to help bring together people with a wide range of disabilities and allow them to meet up, have a day socialising, competing in a fun way and just generally enjoying themselves. The accent on the day is “fun” and any Rotarian who has attended will not fail to talk about the amount of laughter they hear and glee they see on the faces of the competitors.
The games are open to people of ages ranging from 9 to 100, with juniors classed as ages 9 to 15 and seniors classed as ages 16 upwards. The competitors are all registered as disabled and there are no restrictions imposed on the conditions accepted which include Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and other physical handicap from either injury or illness, Blindness or Deafness and Autism. Each competitor can compete in up to three disciplines selected from Table Tennis, Archery, Shooting, Weightlifting, Swimming, Snooker, Darts, New Age Kurling and Boccia. There are also two races for those who are wheelchair bound the Dash and the Slalom; these can be assisted by a carer. A central principle is that the day is provided free of charge to the competitor and their carer. Transport should be enabled by the sponsoring Rotary Club and consideration may also need to be given to the costs of providing carers without whom participation by some may not be possible. The cost of staging the games and those at the venue on the day such as food, drinks etc, will be provided by the organising committee.
