Town Mayor dusts off her running shoes

The Mayor of Snaith and Cowick has raised more than £600 for a mental health charity by successfully completing the Asda Foundation Sheffield 10k run, which took place at the weekend.

For her term as Mayor, Councillor Laura Thompson chose to support Young Minds, a mental health charity working with children, young people and their parents. 

She explained: “Over the last 15 years, as a teacher, I have seen some of the pressures that young people face and how alone that can make them feel. The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on everyone's mental health but I see every day, both as a teacher but also as the town mayor in my local area, the effects that the pandemic and the associated school closures and remote learning have had on young people. I feel strongly that young people should be able to access the mental health support they need, when they need it and, as such, have supported Young Minds through my work in schools for many years and have also chosen Young Minds as my charity for my year as Mayor of Snaith and Cowick.

After deciding to dust off her running shoes ahead of the Sheffield 10K, which was held at Arundel Gate in the city, Councillor Thompson set herself a fundraising target of £500. However, she has already exceeded it, having secured more than £630 in donations so far.
