Museum makes Burton exhibit permanent

A new, permanent exhibit dedicated to the workers of the former Burton clothing factory has been unveiled at Goole Museum.

The factory, which was officially opened by owner Montague Burton and the Princess Royal in 1949, employed generations of Goole women, as well as a smaller number of local men. Initially, the factory produced men's suits for the company's high street tailors before moving into the manufacture of specialist products such as staff uniforms for British Airways and the newly opened Euro Disney in 1992. Suits for a number of television celebrities and professional football teams were also produced in Goole. The factory ceased operations and the building was demolished in 2022.

The museum's new exhibit is based on the personal objects, photos and everyday memories that were donated by former Burton's workers and their families during the 2024 project 'A Stitch in Time'.
