A childminder has been called an “excellent role model” by Ofsted after being rated ‘Outstanding’.
Gemma Howard, who was inspected for the first time by the education watchdog in August since establishing her setting in 2018, said she was “very proud”. The Hemingbrough childminder swept the top mark overall and in all four inspection categories. “Children thrive in the inviting, well-resourced environment,” the inspector said. “The childminder is an excellent role model and consistent in managing behaviour.” Gemma received high praise for her ability to inspire children to learn and her “high expectations”. Behaviour of children was also stated as “exemplary” and the inspector said she was “exceptionally mindful of the needs of children with special educational needs and/or disabilities”.
The inspector’s report said: “The well-qualified childminder has a superb understanding of how young children learn. “She has extremely high expectations for all children to achieve to the best of their abilities. She has put in place a curriculum that inspires children to learn. This ensures that all children make strong progress and achieve the best possible outcomes.” Gemma was also commended for going above and beyond during the pandemic to support families. The inspector added: “Parents praise the thoughtful support the childminder has provided during the Covid-19 pandemic. “The childminder has been inventive in maintaining contact with children and parents. For example, she organised online story times when she read to children. When possible, she met families outdoors for nature walks.” In response, Gemma said: “After 17 years of working in early years I took the decision to set up childminding. “I wanted to provided a home-from-home learning environment for early years children. The village had very limited childcare for under two years. “I have worked hard to build up strong partnerships with the preschool and village school, sharing children from both settings. “I feel very proud to be given this grading and I am very excited to continue to offer outstanding childcare in Hemingbrough.”
