Aldi could be the latest business to invest in Goole after it was announced last week that KFC and Starbucks may be coming to town.
Two new stores, one on Rawcliffe Road and the other in Market Weighton, are on the supermarket giant’s shopping list of potential sites.
A public consultation has been launched to gauge residents’ enthusiasm for the Rawcliffe Road store prior to official plans being submitted to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council. If eventually approved, the site could bring 40 part-time and full-time jobs to the area. Local residents have been sent a consultation leaflet with a summary of the proposed site, while an online consultation is open for everyone to share their views.
Will Brooke, property director, at Aldi, said: “We’ve been looking to bring a new store to Goole for some time and we are extremely excited about the prospect of bringing our fresh, high quality, low price proposition to more customers. The proposals, which make good use of a site in a sustainable location, will provide further choice for shoppers. “We would encourage residents to provide their questions and comments via the project website or the consultation leaflet.” The search for a suitable location in Market Weighton is underway, with hopes that Aldi will be able to secure an area on a main road with good visibility and access. The prime location would need to be 1.5 acres and able to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store with 100 parking spaces. With already more than 900 active stores, the potential expansion is part of Aldi’s goal to deliver an average of one new shop a week.
Ciaran Aldridge, national property director at Aldi UK said: “We have been investing in Britain for more than 30 years now, but we know that there are still areas that either do not have an Aldi at all, or that need another store to meet customer demand. “Shoppers are increasingly looking to get unbeatable prices on their weekly shop without compromising on quality. That’s why, more so than ever, we’re keen to explore all opportunities to open new stores across the country.” The arrival of both shops would add to the influx of food businesses investing in the area after it was announced last week that KFC and Starbucks could be moving in at Glews Services. Whilst the managing director, Joseph Richardson, could not confirm or deny the potential tenants, speculation circulated on social media that KFC and Starbucks would be occupying the 24-hour drive through restaurant and café approved to replace the former car dealership by the regional council.
