Howden MP David Davis met with the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, to push forward the Children’s Parliament project.
The Children’s Parliament was due to be hosted by the late Sir David Amess, however, following the MP’s tragic murder, David Davis agreed to step in and host the event, which was held on October 29 last year. The project saw 270 children from across the country attend a virtual Parliament to discuss climate change, the Covid-19 response and technology. Katie Amess, Sir David’s daughter, has now accepted the patronage of the Children’s Parliament and on Wednesday, February 2, she, alongside David Davis and four children from Saint Pierre Primary School, met with Boris Johnson to hand over the report on the Children's Parliament.
David Davis MP said: “Sir David Amess was an exceptional man and was driven to get more young people involved in politics through the Children’s Parliament. “This is vital, not just for those kids who want to become democratically elected members, but for ensuring civility in society. “I hope the project will also instil in them the same great traits that Sir David showed throughout his life: intelligence, wit, decency and respect. “With his daughter, Katie, taking on the role as Patron of the Children's Parliament, Sir David’s legacy will be secured.”
Katie Amess added: “Like my father, I would like to see democracy and parliamentary process taught in schools. “This is an incredible initiative, whereby children of primary school age can discuss adult issues and send their views directly to the heart of the British Parliament. “From the absolute tragedy of my father’s death, we must ensure that democracy and freedom of speech prevail. Whilst I am an actress and not a politician, I am so proud to be a part of this initiative and in his memory, will do all I possibly can to ensure its success."
